…and so it begins.
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Welcome back!
What in the world is Mindtank Studios?
Welcome everyone, to the amateur videogame-making experiment that is mindtankstudios.com! Mindtank is the brain-child of two West Australian game enthusiasts; one 21 year old graphic designer and one 23 year old software engineer. Together we wish to deliver a joyous freeware adventure game for all to enjoy and to be a part of.
Where Mindtank stray from the usual formula of hobbyist game design is here, on this website. We’re going to use the power of the internet to embark upon a wondrous journey. A journey of informative blogging on topics such as art, sound, programming, voice acting, writing and much more. We wish to share the lessons we learn as we go, respond to feedback and expose the realities of creating an adventure game in your spare time. Audio podcasts are also on the agenda. However, this won’t be coming from “professionals”, as such…
The truth
We’re new to this game making business. We not only see this as an opportunity to entertain and inform, but to gain knowledge and advice from the creative people out there humble enough to share their thoughts. Game making is a collaborative process and we see no reason to limit ourselves to our minds only.
Similarly to a lot of gamers, we’ve always felt the need to make our own game, but never before has it felt so achievable. We know it’s going to take serious man hours and dedication, but we also know not to shoot too high in the beginning. Start small and simple.
We plan to update the site is some way at least once a week. Naturally we’d love to do it every day but we do have full time work to contend with. Update schedule coming soon, for your visiting pleasure.
Why should you care?
Mindtank is comprised of one old-school PC gamer and one not-so-old-school — but still pretty experienced console gamer. Together we’ve played through a truck load of adventure games; some old classics, some new standouts and unfortunately some plain forgettables. As a team we are in agreement of certain design principles that we feel benefit the adventure game genre, minimising the frustrations and maximizing the joys.
Although our videogame portfolio consists mostly of hopes, dreams and a few text-based adventures, we do have backgrounds in highly related fields such as usability, graphic user interfaces, writing, illustration and object-orientated programming. Stay tuned for some examples of our previous work.
Our first project
To end our premiere blog post, we thought we’d tease a few details about our project:
- It’s going to be a 2D point and click adventure, played from a first person view
- We’re looking at a length of around 3 hours for this initial chapter
Stay tuned for the next update!
